Zones: Cool, temperate, arid, semi arid.

Planting & Care

  • Flowering Time: dormant in warmer months and bloom during autumn & winter providing a spectacular display during these seasons.
  • Planting Specifications: Plant with a spacing of 10 – 20cm; the neck of the bulb should be just above the soil.
  • Position: Requires full sun to achieve optimal flowering.
  • Soil Requirements: Thrives in moist, well-drained soil conditions.
  • Watering Needs: Minimal; watering should only supplement natural rainfall, with a preference for dry conditions in spring and summer.
  • Fertilizing: Enrich soil with well-rotted animal manure before planting to promote healthy growth.
  • Pruning: Remove spent flowers to encourage more blooms. Transplanting should be done in early spring, although bulbs prefer to remain crowded.

Unique Points

  • Resilience: Frost tolerant and performs better when bulbs are crowded.
  • Floral Longevity: Cut flowers from these bulbs can last up to 3 weeks in water, making them excellent for cut flower arrangements.
  • Ideal Uses: Perfect as container plants or for creating stunning, long-lasting cut flower displays in your home.

Gardening Tips

  • Naturalizing: For best results, allow bulbs to naturalize in the ground. If left undisturbed, they will yield an increasing number of blooms each year.
  • Preferences: Enjoys dry, hot summers and does not thrive in tropical conditions or when frequently disturbed.
