Hippeastrum Growers Guide | Oldboy's Flowers

Hippeastrums grow in all regions of Australia. This Australian Climate Guide map is intended as a guide only and climatic conditions may vary between specific regions. Hippeastrums are a beautiful and tough plant. These produce flowers for three weeks in Summer, suited to pots and beds.

When Your Bulbs Arrive

Oldboy’s Flowers provide Bulbs that are on average, three year old. This means they have matured and ready to flower during that year's Spring. If you decide to put off planting (for example, wanting to hold off the flowers till christmas). Oldboy suggests placing your bulbs in the fridge crisper(approx. 5 degrees) to hold back the plant from progressing. They can even be stored in a cool place during Winter (DO NOT FREEZE!)

WHERE TO PLANT - GARDEN

1 . Choose a well drained spot in the garden that attracts full sun to part shade and protected from wind

2 . Enrich the soil with some good quality fertiliser. Place chook poo pellets under the bulb

3 . Plant with ⅓ of the bulb protruding above the surface

4 . Space 30cm apart. Water sparingly

5 . Once shoots starts, feed every 2 - 3 weeks with liquid fertilizer

WHERE TO PLANT - POT

1 . Choose a pot that has adequate drainage holes and place in a position that gets full sun to part shade

2 . Fill the pot with some good quality fertiliser and liquid fertlisers. Place chook poo pellets in the pot, We suggest Grow Micro as it supports growth from seedling to bloom stage

6. We HIGHLY recommend using this soil tester . These measure sunlight, soil moisture, temperature and soil pH with this is 4 in 1 digital soil pH meter survey instrument. This soil tester measures the 4 most vital statistics needed for consistant growing conditions of all kinds of indoor/outdoor plants and lawns.

I live in Perth where we receive an average rainfall in winter. At present my Hippeastrum bulbs in 40cm pots are protected from the winter rain. Do you think this is good or not. Some bulbs have not flowered for 7 years yet they are strong, good size and have good root development, I am considering leaving them in the open, uncovered during next winter . Your thoughts please.

Kind Regards Russell Hodder
